Common Mistakes in English Translations

These are some of the common phrases which are direct translations from Tagalog.

“Kill the lights” (wrong) = “Turn off the lights” (right)
“Fall in line” (ambiguous) = “Stand in line” (more appropriate)
“Wait for a while” (long time) = “Wait for a moment” (short break)
“Come again” (huh?) = “Please repeat” (right)
“Take out” (fastfood) = “To go” (more appropriate)
“Dine in” = “For here” (more appropriate)
